Change
Change we are told is constant – then why do so many of us want consistency? Sometimes people say that they like change, and when we explore this a little deeper, it is perhaps more accurate to say that they like variety. So what’s the difference?
With variety you have choice, with change you usually have no choice, no control – you have to go through this change whether you like it or not!
Of course there are many levels of change, and the impact it has on you, will depend on how important this change is to you.
My experience of change is that it isn’t always easy and it can impact you in ways you never appreciated – your sense of identity, values and beliefs. It can affect who you think you are and even your key values in life. And to have those questioned in some way can be, unsettling and even scary. In a time of massive personal change, I remember saying to a dear friend that ‘my life as I knew it had ended’ – and she said ‘yes it has’.
Change whether it is personal or professional will challenge most of us and we have to learn strategies to help us manage the transition from one state to another. The sooner we can come to terms with the change and understand the impact, the sooner we can consider options and make a choice. Making a choice enables a sense of control and releases the stress.
So who’s to say a new life cant begin?
Unfortunately there are no ‘rules’ as to how long we take to come to terms with change and actually take action to move on. We are all different in how we internalise change.
What’s your approach to change?
