The Three R’s
I’m often asked ‘what makes a good leader?’ and most people want more than simply some platitudes about it depending on the situation, the company, and the culture.
So, after 15 years of coaching senior execs what do I really think, what good examples have I seen or experienced?
Well, I have concluded that there are some ‘core qualities’ that leaders need to have, to even be in with a fighting chance of being successful.
Resilience. Resourcefulness. Reflective.
The Three R’s of Leadership!
- RESILIENCE – every leader is going to have times when it gets tough; the task may be harder than first thought, or they are challenged, maybe mistakes are made, their confidence shaken – how do they respond to these/this? Well, they have to grit their teeth and push on, asses the situation, make adjustments, flex their style and get on with it! Disclaimer! You/They may have to dig deep.
- RESOURCEFULNESS – can they think around situations, can they come up with options, creative ideas to take things forward? Do they have the emotional energy to look afresh at things and formulate a solution?
- REFLECTIVE – and finally can they take time to reflect on what they have done, objectively assess the progress and use this to shape/change the way forward? Can they take time in the moment to reflect and then take action?
Have you or your leaders got what it takes – how do you measure up on the three ‘R’s?
Annie.
